Fun Spots Near the Happy Jack, Arizona Cabin - Maxwell Trail

This is Maxwell Trail, Coconino National Forest Trail #37. It is located southwest of the Happy Jack Cabin approximately 20-30 minutes. For more information see the Coconino National Forest page at this location, www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/recreation/mog_rim/maxell-tr.shtml (You may need to copy and paste this link) The trail starts at the end of FR 81E, it's approximately 0.7 miles long and is a steep strenuous hike, coming out, you'll climb approximately 700 ft in 0.6 miles. The trail includes switchbacks to the edge of the rim as it decends into the canyon. At the top of the rim the vegetation consists of species of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and gambel oak. As you decend into the canyon the views are great up and down the canyon. As the trail nears the end at the bottom of the canyon, the vegetation is representative of a riparian community including red-osier dogwood, ash, willow, wild rose, canyon grape, box elder and poison ivy. The trail ends at West Clear Creek, with pools of water holding several species of fish.

Fun Spots Near the Happy Jack, Arizona Cabin - Mack's Crossing

This is Mack's Crossing - Just South of the Clear Creek Subdivision (where the cabin is located). This is a good place for swiming and it's also a nice hike from the cabin. The trail to Mack's Crossing( FR 137) is a short, easy hike into East Clear Creek, it's rocky but not too steep. The creek is one of the rare, perennial (permanently flowing) streams in Arizona, the creek is always flowing. The trail is mostly well away from the water so, be sure to pack in water you may need for drinking. Make sure to purify what you take to drink from the creek. Flow in the creek is from the outfall from Blue Ridge Reservoir. There are several swimming holes, be sure to check the water for debris and rocks before jumping in. It's never a good idea to jump in head first. The road is closed to passenger vehicles and, though all recreational uses are allowed, the trail is quiet. Be sure to follow the leash rule, however, because you will occasionally see off road vehicles on this trail.
